The Logo Loft Website Spotlight: Rick Carter

Welcome to another installment of The Logo Loft Website Spotlight.

Today, The Logo Loft veers off the usual path of spotlighting a design website to point you in the direction of an interview. With the upcoming release of James Cameron's new film Avatar - movie that for months now has carried the moniker of "game-changer" - all eyes are on production designer Rick Carter. Can he and Cameron really change the face of filmmaking with one sci-fi masterpiece? We'll know in a few weeks, but for now, here's a peek inside the man's mind thanks to the Hero Complex blog from the LA Times.

Carter is no stranger to working with big-time directors - Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis (Logo Loft favorites all) are both regular Carter employers. However, Cameron has a history of raising the bar with each movie he releases, and expectations have never been higher for one of his films than they are right now. Check out the interview for a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and rewards involved with creating an entire world from scratch.

Game-changer or not, we here at The Logo Loft are chomping at the bit to see what Cameron, Carter and company have put together. Thanks for joining us today, and check back soon for another Logo Loft Website Spotlight.

The Logo Loft Website Spotlight for 12/09/09

Welcome to The Logo Loft's Website Spotlight. Periodically, we at The Logo Loft will run across something online - the site of an agency doing really cool design work, a profile of a particularly creative designer - that we just have to share. This time around, we're spotlighting both a profile and a site, both involving industial designer Robert Brunner.

In this Design Week profile, Brunner, a former director of industrial design at Apple, talks about his firm Ammunition, and his push to have more ownership in the creative ideas he releases to the marketplace. ("I was giving away intellectual property very cheaply," he says at one point in the interview.) Brunner also discusses his new "cleantech" venture, Regen, in the profile.

For a look at some of the ideas that Ammunition produces, head over to the agency's official website. You'll see samples of their impressive identity work for clients such as Kohler and Sandisk, and, a particular favorite for many of us here at Logo Loft, a healthy roster of products they've helped design, from the Fuego grills to the nook for Barnes & Noble.

At the Logo Loft, we believe that good design work is equal parts strategic thinking and pure inspiration - a philosophy that we see employed wholeheartedly at Ammunition. That's just one reason we're proud to share it as today's Logo Loft Website spotlight.

The Logo Loft Website of the Day: 12/01/09

Welcome to the Logo Loft's website spotlight of the day. On this first day of December, while we continue to try and shake the after-effects of a typical Thanksgiving meal, we return with a brief entry focusing on an article appearing on an old favorite of The Logo Loft's: Designer Daily.

For us here at the Logo Loft, art is as much a part of daily life as coffee and the Internet, so it's no surprise that this article on website illustrations caught our collective eye. From the whimsical drawings gracing the pages of Okami Design to the sketchy stylings of Instant Ad Legend to the fine art feel of A Crayon's Life, this article sent us all over the 'net looking at its diverse and inspiring samples. But don't take our word for it - click on over and take a look for yourself. With 30 examples to choose from, you're bound to find something you like - and something that might inspire a new direction in your own projects, or even your own website.

That's it for today - be sure and check back soon as the Logo Loft continues to bring you new destinations on the World Wide Web.

The Logo Loft Website Spotlight: Platinum

The Logo Loft's designers are always looking for the next great piece of design work to inspire our own efforts, and this time we found it in the bookstore. Unless you've been living under a rock (or, perhaps, an impermeable dome), you know that Stephen King released his new novel this week - a 1,000+ page behemoth called Under The Dome. Along with the usual pre-release buzz that any King book gets, this one has gotten some extra attention for its innovative cover, created by the artists and designers at Platinum.

Lilja's Library, one of the best sources of King news on the 'net, has an exclusive interview with the creative team behind the cover. There's also some concept art from the team accompanying the interview, showing how the cover progressed from King's original "sketch" to the finished piece of work now gracing more than a million copies of the hardback.

It's a nice peek behind the curtain at the design process - the same type of process that Logo Loft designers go through with their work: refinement, editing, refining again, and tweaking until it's just right.

The Logo Loft Website Spotlight for Nov. 4, 2009

Here at The Logo Loft, inspiration can come from anywhere - from someone working here in the office, or someone working on the other side of the globe. Today, The Logo Loft is excited to share the website of a talented designer from half a world away: Caroline Gilroy.

Born and raised in Australia, Caroline Gilroy has taken her interests in typography, print design, and publication design, and has translated those influences into a strong portfolio of work - much of which you can see on her website. Her clients include Atlantic Magazine, Nick Cave (for his play "Come Undone"), and The Dungog Film Festival. Her work is striking, simple and bold, and well worth checking out for designers and design enthusiasts.
